Robert Thomas “Bob” Shanks March 23, 1939 – February 07, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Branchburg, NJ– Robert Thomas “Bob” Shanks, 79, entered into eternal life on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at home with loving and devoted family by his side. Born in Paterson, NJ, son of the late Thomas Walter and Euphemia Steele (nee McLean) Shanks, he had resided in Clifton, NJ, and Lake Hiawatha, NJ, prior to settling in Branchburg, NJ, in 1972. Bob faithfully served his country with the United States Army from 1963-1965 with a final rank of Specialist 4th Class.

He was granted a BA degree in Math Education from William Paterson College and an MA degree in Math Education from Montclair State College. Bob retired as the District Math Supervisor for the Edison Public Schools in 1994. Earlier he had taught Mathematics for the Montville Public Schools and was Math Department Head at Montville High School.

In addition, he taught math courses at Rutgers, the State University, for 10 years as an adjunct instructor. Involved in a variety of professional activities throughout his 30-year career, Bob was president of the following organizations: The Montville Township Education Association, the Branchburg Township Board of Education, the Edison Supervisors Association and the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey. He was also appointed to represent the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics on the Board of the Consortium of Mathematics Applications, located in Boston.

Bob helped to organize the Institute of New Math Teachers offered by Rutgers and coordinated the Summer Institute for four years. Over the years, he spoke at a number of state and national meetings on current topics in mathematics education. Bob had a passion for postcard collecting and was a member of the Washington Crossing Card Collectors Club of Titusville, NJ, serving four years as their treasurer.

He loved going to estate sales, playing bridge, and playing ping pong with both his children and grandchildren. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Arminda “Mindy” (nee Nemeth) Shanks; two devoted children, Robert Scott Shanks and his significant other, Kathleen Danaher, and Stacy and her husband, Michael Kohler; and two cherished grandchildren, Gavin Kohler and Addison Kohler. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing at Countryside Funeral Home, 724 Route 202 North, Three Bridges, NJ 08887 on Monday, February 11, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Funeral services will also take place at the funeral home on Monday, February 11, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev.

Jennifer Cho of the Bridgewater United Methodist Church of Bridgewater, NJ, officiating the prayers. At the family’s request, the disposition will be private. In lieu of flowers and/or donations, Bob has asked that his friends seek an opportunity to help and/or comfort someone in need.
