Robert Wayne Brooks age 83, of Sanford, NC, died Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Universal Healthcare in Lillington with his family by his side. He was born in Lee County, NC on October 22, 1934 to the late Robert Norwood Brooks and Mary Ellen Dickens Brooks Leslie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-father Julian Leslie and a brother Prentice Lee Brooks.

Wayne’s first job was delivering for Fairview Dairy. Most of his career was with Harris Wholesale retiring as a manager. Following retirement, he worked as a truck driver for Sanford Contractors.

Wayne was well known for his huge personality and wicked sense of humor. His ability to tell stories is well known, especially about his early childhood spent at the Elon Orphanage. Wayne is survived by his wife Shirley Ann Hurley Brooks; son Ronald Brooks and wife Norbeth Sloan Brooks; daughter Ellen Dale Brooks Such and husband Maxey all of Sanford; grandchildren Annie Brooks Carberry and husband Billy of Charlotte, Trey Such and wife Ashley of Spiveys Corner, Ethan Brooks of Raleigh, Brook Such of Sanford; and one great-granddaughter Mary Beth Carberry.

A graveside service will be held Friday, April 20, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Flat Springs Baptist Church cemetery with Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the home of Ronald and Norbeth, 2921 Greenbriar Dr., Sanford, NC 27330. Please dress casually for Wayne’s graveside service including no neckties and no jackets.

This will please Wayne so much. Flowers are acceptable but memorials may be made to Flat Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 4148 Deep River Road, Sanford, NC 27330.
