Royce Dean’s Obituary MARION, VA Psalms 63:6-8 When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help therefore in the shadow of your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You, your right hand upholds me.

Royce is no longer in the shadow of his wings but now stands in the presence of our Lord and Savior. Royce Dean Barker age 73 went home to be with his Lord on Monday January 28, 2019 at his home in Marion, VA. Royce was born in Rural Retreat to the late Arnie & Evelyn Wood Barker.

He is also preceded in death by his brothers Larry Barker and Fred Barker; and great niece Marissa Shuler. Royce was a purple heart veteran from the U.S. Marine Corp, having served during the Vietnam War. He then worked for the Smyth County Sheriff’s Department, Virginia State Police, and later retiring from Smyth County Ambulance Service.

Royce was a simple humble man and will be deeply missed by all that knew him. Survivors include his sister Deborah Thweatt & husband Melvin of Marion; nephews and nieces Jared Shuler & wife Brittany of Marion, Michelle Kell & husband Ralph of Marion, Beth Spence & husband Dean of Rich Valley, Brandon Barker of LA, Matthew Barker of LA, Jennifer Pruett & husband Paul of TX; sister-in-law Betty Barker of Marion; great nephews and nieces Cory Spence of Rich Valley, Drew Spence & wife Kim of Marion, Chris Kell & wife Amanda of Marion, Laura Kell of Marion; great-great nephews and nieces Jeremiah & Lucas Shuler, Bradley Kell, Evan Barker, Lily Kell, Lilly Barker, Alisha Barker, Chloe Barker; and so many special friends and comrades to include the Mike Company 3/7 U.S. Marine Corp. Semper-Fi.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday February 2, 2019 at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat with Pastor Kenny Rich officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Marine Corp. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00AM for the procession to the cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00PM on Friday evening at the funeral home, or anytime at Betty’s home 709 Dogwood Lane, Marion, VA, 24354. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the South Fork Baptist Church Mission Fund. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.
