Ruth Davis Martin, 93, of Waynesboro and formerly of Collinsville, Virginia, passed away January 5, 2019 at Waynesboro Manor Assisted Living. She was born in Martinsville on February 13, 1925, the daughter of the late George Leonard Davis and Mary Stultz Davis. She was also predeceased by her husband, Archie Curtis Martin and a sister, Belva Cochran.

Ruth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann Martin and William Frank Pannill of Waynesboro, Virginia. Additional survivors… Read More » include a niece, Lois Cochran Prillaman, a great-niece, and a number of great-nephews. After more than a decade in retail sales at the former Leggett Department Store in downtown Martinsville, Ruth settled into her lifelong vocation as a devoted and loving wife and mother.

She and Curtis enjoyed 57 years of marriage before his death in 2008. As a couple, they loved to travel, garden, and spend time with their daughter and son-in-law in Waynesboro. Ruth was a charter member of First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville, where she loved to sing in the choir.

Beginning as a member of Kate Anderson Presbyterian Church (the mother church of First Presbyterian of Collinsville) when she was a young girl, Ruth sang in the choir for over 70 years before moving to Stuarts Draft Retirement Community at the age of 87. At her new home, she continued her love of music, still learning new tunes on the piano–which she played by ear–and entertaining her fellow residents at SDRC into her nineties. In 2017, due to failing health, Ruth moved to Waynesboro Manor Assisted Living.

The family would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the staff at Waynesboro Manor and to the Hospice of the Shenandoah for the loving care shown to Ruth in her final days. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville with the Reverend John Wiederholt officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends forty-five minutes prior to the service. Contributions in Ruth’s memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville, PO Box 655, Collinsville VA 24078. Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory of Martinsville, VA is serving the Martin family.
