Obituary for Sheldon M Stanley Sheldon M. Stanley Lubec It is with profound sadness the Stanley’s share with Sheldon’s many many friends and family of his death. He died at his residence on Maple Tree Road on November 15, 2018. Sheldon was our Dad, Dad to many others, friends to many, mentor to many, and mostly our hero.
He was born in Lubec on a cold March day on the 8th in 1943 to the late Melvin and Leona (Tinker) Stanley. Dad was quick to learn a formal education was not where his future was to take him. When Dad reached the sixth grade he chose to drop out of school.
He worked hard at many many jobs to create an income. As the years moved on he bought his first dump truck, which he loaded by hand with a round pointed shovel. He worked very hard, and would go on to create a highly succesful construction company named respectfully Sheldon M. Stanley INC.
Dad was a very private man who was very giving. Dad would often help people who needed help and words never needed to be spoken for the kind and generous man he was. Over the years he tore down buildings, built buildings, ran concrete, installed many septic systems, and was admired for his intellect, wisdom and natural talent.
Every now and then in the Town of Lubec you would hear a loud explosion and you would hear someone comment “Ayup Sheldon is dynamiting Porcupine Mountain today “. Dad worked for many many locals, as well as many who frequented Lubec on a temporary basis. Through his work and his easy approachability he would develop life long friendships from coast to coast.
Dad cared very deeply for Lubec, and served in the Lubec Lions Club, Lubec Board of Selectmen, Lubec Budget Committee, Lubec School Board and was well known to be the Master of Ceremonies at the weekly Sunday morning meetings at his previous garage in North Lubec. The Sunday morning meeting was aptly known as the “Sunday morning church meeting”. Many would attend the meeting,over the years, where around the wood stove they would discuss and informally solve many issues.
There are numerous memorable moments which were made around this woodstove. On December 29th Sheldon married Tanya Foley from Eastport. After their marriage they welcomed Donna Jean “aka Mini Me “ in 1963 and Deborah Ann “the apple of his eye “ in 1966.
He is survived by his wife Tanya, daughters Donna Stanley Kelley and her husband Skipper, Deborah Stanley Campbell and her family, grandsons Dillon Stanley Dudek, and his significant other Julie Thompson, Jehial Stanley Campbell and the light of his life his great- granddaughter Kaelynn Faith Dudek In addition to his parents he was predeceased by two brothers – Hollison and Radcliff, and two sisters Agatha Hood and Flora Mae Guptill. Anyone who knew him was keenly aware of his deep love for animals, especially dogs. We find comfort in knowing when Dad crossed over there were many happy tails wagging in heaven.
At Dads request he will be cremated and the family will hold a memorial service at the quarry “Porcupine Mountain” in the spring, where his ashes will be spread in the place he loved. The family will announce a date and time at a later date.
