Shirley Bonk, 64 Kearney resident Shirley A. Bonk, 64, of Kearney, died Monday, March 25, 2019 at CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church. Father Joe Hannappel will officiate.

Inurnment will take place at Kearney Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church followed by a Vigil/ Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. osrfh.com. Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services. Shirley was born October 14, 1954 in Columbus, Nebraska to Edward and Joan (Mahoney) Pieters.

She was raised in Columbus, NE and was a 1972 graduate of Columbus High School. On January 13, 1973, Shirley was united in marriage to David Bonk at St Isidore’s Catholic Church in Columbus, NE. To this union four children were blessed; Lisa, Philip, Mark and Paul.

Shirley served as the parish secretary at St. James Catholic Church for 16 years before retiring in 2016. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church where she was active on several different committees, including taking communion to homebound parish members. Shirley enjoyed Scrabble, crossword puzzles, playing cards, reading and fishing.

But above all, she loved being a mother and grandmother. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, David Bonk of Kearney; children, Lisa (Gary) Barnes of Lincoln, Philip (Marissa) Bonk of South St. Paul, MN, Mark (Christine) Bonk of Kearney and Paul (Lauren) Bonk of Kearney; grandchildren, Matthew, Aaron, Zachary and Michael Barnes, Olivia, Andrew, Allison and Owen Bonk, Fisher and Siena Bonk, Charles and Lucille Bonk; two brothers; five sisters; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and one sister.
