Shirley A. Smith, 83, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care, Monday, December 17, 2018 at home with her loving family by her side. Born March 17, 1935, in Hanover, PA, she was the daughter of the late Irvin C. and Pauline G. (Lansinger) Markle. She was the loving wife of the late James B. Smith with whom she shared sixty years of marriage until his passing on March 13, 2016.

Shirley was a 1953 graduate of Eichelberger High School, Hanover, PA. She worked part-time at various local businesses and was the owner of Candyland Express in New Oxford, PA for ten years. In addition to her loving husband, James, Shirley is survived by her children, Allen P. Smith and wife Mary Jo of Boalsburg, PA, Lori A. DeGroft and husband Gerry of Hanover, PA, and Lonny E. Smith and wife Sherry of Hanover, PA; six grandchildren, Jessica, Jamison, Brittani, Kortni, Megan and Emily; six great-grandchildren, Harper, Kellan, Gavin, Mason, Elena, and Roman; a brother, William Markle and wife Charlotte of Oviedo, FL; and a sister, Linda Cookerly and husband Tom of Hanover, PA.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kerry J. Smith; a brother, Dennis Markle; and a sister, Janet Thiemeyer. A funeral service to celebrate and remember Shirley’s life will be held 12:00 PM, Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA with the Rev. Jennifer Murphy officiating.

A Viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 11:00 AM -12:00 PM, Friday, December 21, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, PA. The family would like to thank Shirley’s caregivers Bonnie, Nicola, Stephanie, and Angel for their love, compassion, and support.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Shirley’s memory to Hospice Program of the VNA of Hanover & Spring Grove, 440 N. Madison Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
