Shirley H. Cassagne, 90, of Hanover, PA, formerly of Columbia, MD, entered God’s eternal care, Sunday, October 7, 2018 with her family by her side. Born November 13, 1927 in New Orleans, LA, she was the daughter of the late Lubin H. and Elsie L. (Major) Hurst. She was the loving wife of the late Henry Frellsen Page Cassagne, Jr., who passed away in 1999 and with whom she shared over forty-six years of marriage.

Shirley was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Columbia, Maryland for over 43 years. Shirley was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and homemaker. She was truly an amazing, strong, loving and funny woman – a sweet and gentle, but spunky Southern Belle.

She triumphed through many hardships in her life including The Great Depression, World War II, and the losses of her husband Henry, 19 years ago, as well as her son Greg, 4 years ago. Yet despite all of these struggles, she remained steadfast in her faith, devoted to her family, and committed to her silly sense of humor. Shirley loved a good meal followed by ice cream, jazz music that reminded her of her New Orleans roots, crossword puzzles, attending church, and praying to St. Anthony when she misplaced something.

She spent most of her time with her family which is what brought her the greatest joy. Shirley’s quality of character has influenced and shaped not only her children but her grandchildren and in turn the generations to come. Shirley is survived by three daughters, Janet C. Maffey and her husband Ken, of Lewes, DE, Lisa M. Cassagne of Franklin, PA and Kathy A. Ashley and her husband David, of Hanover, PA; eleven grandchildren, Kevin C. Maffey and his wife Lisa, Justin M. Maffey and his wife Vanessa, Grant O. Hugus, Juan C. Hugus, D. Carolina Hugus, Jose M. Hugus, J. Felipe Hugus, Colleen Ensor and her husband Mike, Heather Ashley, Andrew Ashley and Megan Ashley; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gregory A. Cassagne and two siblings, Major Hurst and Gloria Chatelain. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 6:00-9:00 PM, Thursday, October 11, 2018 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA.
