Obituary for Sholom Marvin Shefferman SHEFFERMAN SHOLOM MARVIN SHEFFERMAN Sholom Marvin Shefferman, 91, a mechanical engineer who co-founded a prominent DC consulting engineering firm, died May 10, 2018 at Suburban Hospital after a brief illness. In 1951, Sholom co-founded Shefferman and Bigelson, an international engineering consulting firm, which grew to 130 employees and at one point maintained an office in Tehran. Under the leadership of Sholom and Art Bigelson, the firm provided the mechanical and technical engineering for Tysons II, the renovation of the statuesque Treasury building, the Holocaust Museum, the Capital Centre, and construction of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, among other prominent structures.
Shefferman and Bigelson routinely defied the segregated norms of 1950’s Washington, DC by hiring African American graduates of Howard University’s engineering school. Sholom, who was born Aug. 10, 1926 in Washington, D.C., enlisted in the Navy and then followed his boyhood dream of becoming an engineer by enrolling at Cornell University, graduating with a mechanical engineering degree in 1946.
Sholom retired in 1994. Sholom generously contributed to the Washington DCJCC and the Technion, the Israel Institute of technology, along with his wife of 49 years, Adele, who died in 1997. In 1999, Sholom married Theda Banker Shefferman, with whom he continued to generously support numerous charities, including Arena Stage.
The Technion presented him with its prestigious man of the year award in 2012. His wife survives him, along with his three children, Laraine (Shefferman) Barclay, Wendy (Shefferman) Skolnik (Avner Skolnik), and Brian Shefferman (Lisa Newman), stepchildren Larry Banker (Amy Banker), and Scott Banker, six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. A graveside service will take place Friday, May 11, 1:30 p.m. at King David Memorial Gardens in Falls Church, VA.
The Shefferman’s welcome extended family and friends to Shiva from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Westlake Towers in the clubhouse (ground level), 7420 Westlake Terrace, Bethesda, MD on Monday May 14 and Tuesday May 15. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to JSSA, 6123 Montrose Rd, Rockville, MD 20852. Services entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Danzansky Goldberg Funeral Care.
