Sister Bertha (Mary Kathleen) O’Neill died at 8:45 p.m. on February 8, 2019 at Seton Residence in Evansville, Indiana. Sister Bertha was born on May 21, 1927 in Nashville, Tennessee and was one of three children of John Anthony and Bertha (Gustafson) O’Neill. She graduated from Isaac Litton High School in Nashville in 1945 and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Missouri in 1947.

After initial formation, Sister Bertha was sent to serve as bookkeeper at St. Mary Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1948-49) and at DePaul Settlement in Chicago, Illinois (1949-53). Sister received a B.A. in History from Marillac College in St. Louis, Missouri and a MLS in Library Science from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. Sister Bertha taught at St. Ann School in Dallas, Texas (1953-63), Notre Dame High School in Price, Utah (1964-68) and St. Joseph High School in New Orleans, Louisiana (1968-75).

Sister had a variety of services after that time, including working at the Secretariat at Marillac Provincia late in St. Louis (1975-77), Educational Director at Marywood Home of Holy Infancy in Austin, Texas (1977-80), bookkeeper at De Paul Family Center in San Antonio, Texas (1980-82), librarian at St. Vincent High School in Perryville, Missouri (1982-2002), docent at Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg, Maryland (2002-05), Assistant Librarian at Cardinal Ritter College Prep in St. Louis Missouri (2005-11) and Patient Visitor at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee from 2011 until 2013 when she came to Seton Residence to serve in the Ministry of Prayer. A Wake Service will be held on Wednesday, February 13, at 10:00 a.m. in the Seton Residence Chapel and will be followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Sister Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Anthony O’Neill, Jr. and her sister Deloris Huttinger and she is survived by her nieces, nephews, cousins, her Sisters in Community and many friends.
