Smith Sweeney, LtCol USMC, Retired, passed into heaven April 22, 2018. He was born to Lucy Smith and William Tate Sweeney, Marshall, Missouri on January 30, 1936. Smith was an Eagle Scout; he received a BS in Math in 1958 from Missouri Valley College and was commissioned into the Marine Corps at the same time.

He served two tours of duty on Okinawa, one tour in Vietnam where he was at Khe Sahn for the duration of the siege in 1968. Smith had interesting assignments serving with all three Marine Divisions as well as MCRD Dallas, Marine Barracks Boston and in Germany with HQEUCOM. He served as a Judge the last five years of active duty at Camp Pendleton, California retiring in ’84.

Smith again retired from Home Depot in 2002. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Ann Bodie Sweeney, daughter, Sonya Diimmler and son-in-law, David Diimmler. Smith was a member of the Old Rock Presbyterian Church in Marshall, Missouri.

Since moving to South Carolina in 1994, he attended Gateway Baptist Church in Irmo and was baptized in the Jordan River in 2007. Smith was man of few words, a man of integrity and honor, a man faithful to God and his family. The service will be at Gateway Baptist at 1650 Dutch Fork Rd.

Irmo on Friday, April 27 at 12 noon with visitation following, burial/internment at 3pm Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.
