Obituary for Steve Gleason Steve Gleason, 78 of Grand Island, went to his Heavenly home on Saturday, January 5, 2018 at Edgewood in Grand Island. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 AM Friday at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Reverend James Golka will be the celebrant.

Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hastings at 1:30 PM on Friday. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Education Foundation.

Steve was born on February 5, 1940, in Norton, Kansas, the only child of Lawrence and Corinne (Munson) Gleason. He grew up in Hastings graduating from Hastings High School in 1958 and from Hastings College in 1963 majoring in Business and Sociology. He was united in marriage to Sharon Bassett on June 22, 1963.

Steve and Sheeré lived in Omaha for a brief time where he was a department manager at JC Penney’s. Wanting to impact children’s lives, they moved to Kearney where Steve attended Kearney State College graduating with a degree in Education. In 1966, he began a 33-year career with the Grand Island Public Schools.

For two years, Steve taught 5th grade at Starr Elementary before becoming a principal at Jefferson. While working for the Grand Island Public Schools, he attained a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska. Steve was a principal at Jefferson, Stolley Park, Seedling Mile, and Gates before retiring in 1999.

After retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher in Grand Island before becoming a supervisor of student teachers for the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Steve helped Sheeré teach Sunday School at Trinity United Methodist Church for over 30 years. They also taught ballroom dancing for many years.

He was in the Army Reserves from 1961 to 1967. Steve was an avid sports fan of the Huskers, Royals and Chiefs. He was an excellent tennis player and enjoyed working in the yard.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sheeré of Grand Island; four children, Steve and his wife Michele of Omaha, Scott and his wife Ondria of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bob and his wife Mindy of Wichita, Kansas and Christy of Sioux Center, Iowa; and 9 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Samantha. Online condolences may be sent to www.
