EDGERTON— Stewart “Pete” O. Kersten, age 95, of Edgerton, died on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Porter Township on Nov.

27, 1922 the son of Carl and Lillian (Hackbarth) Kersten. He graduated from Edgerton High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, where he received Wings of Flying Officer at Aloe Field, TX. In 1944, as a Single Engine Pilot, he was transferred to Multi Engine B 24’s in September of 1944 and was sent to Italy… Read More » with the 15th Air Force 451st Bomb Group 724th Squad.

On a mission to Vienna, Austria he was forced to bail out over Hungary and was taken prisoner, spending time in Budapest Stalagluft III and 7A Prison Camps. He was liberated by Patton’s 3rd Army on April 29, 1945. In October of 1945, he was placed on Inactive Duty.

After the War, Pete worked construction in Alaska. When he returned home he worked for T.S. Willis in Janesville and Jones Dairy Farm in Fort Atkinson. He married Donna Scheidegger on December 11, 1955 and she preceded him in death on Feb.

22, 2012. Pete was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Edgerton. Pete is survived by his daughter, Carol LaBelle; son, Scott Kersten of Edgerton; grandson, Paul Kersten; granddaughter, Cassandra LaBelle; 3 great-grandchildren: Damian, Paige, and Guage; and a brother, Don (Julie) Kersten of Edgerton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna; a sister, Esther; and 4 brothers: Charles, Robert, Earl and Clair Kersten. At Pete’s request no services will be held. Memorials may be made in his name to the Badger Honor Flight, P.O. Box 258066, Madison, WI 53725.
