Suzanne Gaujot Gibson Madden May 17, 1930 – December 25, 2018 On Tuesday, December 25, 2018, Mrs. Suzanne Gaujot Gibson Madden, loving mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home, where her family had gathered to celebrate Christmas. Born May 17, 1930, in Richmond, VA she was the daughter of the late Frank Nicely and Susan Ellen (Gaujot) Gibson. She was the wife of the late Commander Raymond A. Madden, USN (Ret).

Mrs. Madden received a degree in psychology from Westhampton College-University of Richmond in 1951 after which she embarked on a brief career as a social worker for the state of Virginia. Following her marriage in December of 1952, she became a full-time Navy wife and homemaker, crisscrossing the country multiple times with children and pets in tow, and quickly setting up house at each duty station. She reentered the workforce in 1973 as a teller at F&M Bank in McLean, VA and later worked for the Central Intelligence Agency.

She moved to Frederick in 1986 and retired soon after from government service. Suzanne was formerly a volunteer with the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Historical Society of Frederick County. She also co-founded The Frederick Basket Company in downtown Frederick with her daughters-in-law, and she maintained an active role in store operations for 20 years.

An enthusiastic bridge player, Suzanne often played several times each week and treasured her card playing friendships. She read avidly, indulged in British murder mystery series on public television, and enjoyed the weekly challenge of the Sunday crossword puzzle. Her sweet potato casserole, covered with marshmallows, was legendary.

A cherished companion was Beau, her pet Clumber Spaniel, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Madden is survived by her four children: William F. Madden of Uniontown, PA; James T. Madden and wife Kimberly of Frederick; John P. Madden and wife Eileen of Ashburn, VA; and Elizabeth A. Madden and husband George B. Francis, Jr. of South Boston, VA. She is also survived by her three grandchildren: Grant D.P. Madden, Ashley C.S. Madden and Patrick M. Madden.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 3, 2018, from 3pm to 7pm at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. The interment will be held privately in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702 or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 744806, Atlanta, GA 30374.
