Obituary for Sylvia Ann Harrison Beloved wife, cherished mother, devoted grandmother, great-grandmother and friend of many, Sylvia Ann (Shadowens) Harrison, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at her home in Karnack, Texas surrounded by her loving family. Sylvia was born in Tatum, Texas on November 27, 1928 to George Thomas and Ethyl Maybelle Shadowens. She grew up, the daughter of sharecroppers who lived in Deberry many years where Sylvia learned at a very early age a strong work ethic.
She spent many hours in the cotton fields, picking cotton and toting that cotton sack. According to Sylvia, she married the love of her life, James Henry Harrison on December 22, 1951. According to James Henry, he married the love of his life on December 23, 1951.
As a result, they always celebrated their wedding anniversary on both days. Sylvia is preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of almost 51 years, James Henry Harrison; her infant son, James Henry Harrison, Jr.; her parents, George Thomas and Ethyl Maybelle Shadowens; five sisters, Laura, Lucille, Eula Mae, Jewel, Jennette and two brothers, Hubert and William “Bill”. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Patti Christmas and her husband, Robert; her son, Mike Harrison; her grandchildren, Candice Colvin and her fiancé, Jeremy Hughes, Casey Colvin, Chad Harrison, Ryan Harrison and his wife, Grace and Elice Harrison.
She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Caden Landreneaux and his wife, Claire, Cutter Landreneaux, Suvi Stoor, Eastyn Letchworth; her sister, Annie Jean Barbe; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members; her four-legged fur-baby, Baby Girl; and many friends who were blessed by her friendship. Sylvia earned the reputation of exceeding and perfecting any endeavor she attempted. She was an expert marksman, hitting 99 out of 100 bullseye from 40 yards every time she shot.
She retired from Thiokol after 27 years where she worked as a guard. She was little, but mighty, and knew no quit. She was a member of the Women’s International Bowling Congress, and a very competitive bowler where she proudly bowled sometimes five nights a week, earning the title of “Champion” and a beautiful trophy to prove her abilities.
Sylvia was very fluent in sign language, was an excellent bookkeeper, loved her Lord and was devoted to doing her Bible studies. She once owned an Indian motorcycle and her family just recently learned she mastered flying lessons during the 1940s, but her true passion in life was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored. Sylvia lived a full life, was well loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 16, 2018 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Meadowbrook Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 2:00pm at Meadowbrook Funeral Home with Ron Segers officiating. Private interment will be in Algoma South Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Harrison, Chad Harrison, Caden Landreneaux, Cutter Landreneaux, Tommy Ishee and Jerry Craver. The family wish to express their sincere thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice and Sylvia’s nurse, Dara Agent-Thurmon for the love and care shown during her illness. Special thanks also to Sylvia’s home care givers, Camille Knighten, Hazel Williams, Bertha Knighten and Melissa Woodkins for their love and care.
