Sylvia’s Obituary Sylvia Ann Layden Miller, 83, died Monday, March 18, 2019 in Elizabeth City Health & Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Miller was born in the Belvidere community of Perquimans County on September 29, 1935, and was the daughter of the late Archie Elfred and Beatrice Evelyn Copeland Layden. A homemaker and mother, she also had provided child care in her home and enjoyed those children while their mothers worked.

In later years after raising her family, she worked at Divers Jewelers in Hertford, Louis Selig’s Jewelers in Elizabeth City, and with Project Green Thumb at the Perquimans County Health Department. Raised in the fellowship of Piney Woods Friends Meeting, after marrying and moving to Winfall in 1950, she joined Mt. Sinai Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School, had been a member of the W.M.U., had been a GA and Acteen leader, and had worked in Vacation Bible School.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Oliver and Carlton Layden; by her sister, Doris Monds; and by her son-in-law, Arlyn Dail. Surviving are her children, Michael Miller and wife, Carol, of Elizabeth City, Joan Tomeu and husband, Rick, of Jacksonville, Paul Miller and wife, Karen, of Edenton, and Paula Dail of Rock Hill, SC; four sisters, Adelaide Hendrix of Tyner, Helen Riddick of Portsmouth, VA, Clemma Bunch of Belvidere, and Marlene Bass of Hobbsville; 10 grandchildren, Chad (Lauren) Miller, Gina (Tim) Garriss, Matt (Candace) Katherman, Adam Katherman, Kike (Christa) Tomeu, Jeannie (Andrew) Chamberlain, Lindsey (Joey) Wendle, Evan Miller, John Paul (Kelli) Dail, and Ann (Frank) Hunter; and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Mt.

Sinai Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Howard Sutton. Friends may join the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the church service, and a private burial will be in the Up River Cemetery.
