Ted Smith (Edward Parley Smith) October 1, 1933 – July 25, 2018 Coach Ted Smith, 84, of Roy passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at McKay-Dee Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 1, 1933 in Lewiston, Utah. He is the sixth of eight children born to Alma and Phyllis Smith.

Ted attended North Cache High School where he began a stellar basketball career. After high school, he played ball in Cedar City at BAC, in the Army for two years, and at Utah State University as captain of the team where he was selected All-Conference and All-American Honorable Mention. Ted married Juanita Nelson in 1957, and they raised their four children in Roy.

Ted began teaching and coaching in Granite School District. He then came to Weber School District where he taught and coached at Roy Junior High, Sand Ridge Junior High, and Roy High School. Ted coached basketball at Roy High for 20 years where he also served as Athletic Director until his retirement.

His teams won six Region Championships and went to the State Tournament nearly every year. He was named as the State of Utah Athletic Director of the Year in 1984 and was selected as a Distinguished High School Coach in the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. Coach Smith influenced many lives as he taught and coached hundreds of students and gifted players throughout his lifetime.

He loved Roy High School and the relationships he had with the staff and students. He was known for his soft-spoken demeanor and his tenacious playing and coaching abilities. Roy High paid tribute to Ted by naming the main gymnasium in his honor and inducting him into the Royal Hall of Honor.

Ted was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various callings in the Lake View Ward. Besides basketball, he enjoyed golf, tennis, ping-pong, hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. Ted is survived by his wife Juanita Smith and their four children – Dan (Sheri) Smith of Roy; Debbie (Bart) Stevens of Riverdale; Shanna (Jay) Eldredge of Layton; Ted (Sue) Smith of West Haven; 17 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 11 am at the Lake View Ward Chapel, 4900 S. 2000 W. Roy, Utah. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, July 29, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 W. 5600 S. and Monday morning prior to the service from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Lake View Ward. Interment, Roy City Cemetery.

We love our husband, dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather! He left a legacy that is far reaching. He will be dearly missed.
