Virginia Hoefer January 22, 1929 – February 14, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Virginia Hoefer, 90, a lifelong resident of Farley, Iowa passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Luther Manor in Dubuque, Iowa. Friends and relatives of Virginia may call from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley, Iowa where a wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m, Monday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial for Virginia will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa with Rev.

Michael Schueller presiding. Burial will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Farley, Iowa. She was born January 22, 1929 in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Joseph E. and Rose Marie (Carden) Scherrman.

She is a graduate of the former St. Joseph’s High School in Farley, Iowa. She also attended Bayless Business College in Dubuque, Iowa. On October 5, 1949 she was united in marriage to John Hoefer in Farley, Iowa.

He preceded her in death on July 20, 2013. The couple farmed in the rural Farley area. Mom affectionately called a “City girl” by her father-in-law, was not afraid to get her hands dirty.

She helped wherever Dad needed her on the farm whether that was plowing the fields, baling hay, milking cows, or running lunch out to the field to save Dad time. On top of this, she kept the house spotless, the kids in clean clothes and huge evening meals on the table. She was also the main caregiver to the annual flock of 300 or so chickens that would end up in the freezer by summer’s end.

In her downtime, she enjoyed cross stitching, reading and spending time at the Cabin on Lake Delhi. Friday mornings were reserved for catching up with her friends at the beauty shop. She was a lifelong basketball and football fan especially her beloved Hawkeyes.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Farley, a member of its Altar and Rosary Society and a member of the Dubuque County Farm Bureau. She is survived by three children, Ron(Virginia) Hoefer of Dubuque, IA, Mary Jo (Todd) McDermott of Dubuque, IA, and Joanie (Dave) Neyens of Anamosa, IA; two daughters-in-law, Nancy (Rick ) Heim of Farley, IA and Christy (Scott) Deutmeyer of Dyersville, IA; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond (Pearl) Scherrman of Farley, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kathleen Funke of Worthington, IA, Charles Hoefer of Epworth, IA, Bill (Anna Mae) Hoefer of Marion, IA and Earl Haberman of Dubuque, IA; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Thomas Hoefer and Edward Hoefer; a daughter Ann Marie Hoefer in infancy and her sister, Ann (Len) Siegert; sisters-in-law Clara (Gene) Kuehn, Genevieve (Ray) Regan Helen Haberman and Clarice “Lavon” Hoefer; brother-in-law, Maurice (Norine) Hoefer.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in memory of Virginia Hoefer to St. Joseph’s Church growth and Improvement Fund or Hospice of Dubuque.
