Virginia June Traubert (Hanners) was born September 13, 1931 in Klamath Falls, Oregon to Augusta (Rotan) and C. Thomas Hanners. She passed from this life August 14, 2018 in Bozeman, Montana due to heart failure. She grew up as an only child in a series of dirt floor cabins in lumber towns in Oregon and northern California, where her family endured many hardships.

After Virginia… Read More » left home, she attended San Francisco State College and worked as a nanny. She later left California to work as a teacher in a one-room school house in rural Montana, near Miles City.

Her landlady introduced her to a handsome young geophysicist working in oil exploration nearby. Don and Virginia were married 58 years until his death. Virginia loved art from an early age.

She often doodled on company papers from the sawmills where her parents worked. She also loved horses which became the subjects of her early drawings. She was an accomplished cook and a very talented seamstress, sewing many clothes and costumes for her family.

She and Don and their growing family moved frequently throughout Oklahoma and Texas due to his work in the oil business. Their last move was to Dallas, Texas. During her children’s school years, Virginia supported them as they pursued interests in orchestra, band, and dance.

After her four children graduated high school and began their college careers, Virginia decided to complete her degree and enrolled at The University of Texas at Dallas. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art. After Don retired, Virginia realized her dream of returning to Montana where they built a log home, complete with a large studio where she could sew, paint or work on jewelry design.

Virginia was a charter member of Bozeman’s Thread Artists Chapter of the Embroiders Guild of America. Virginia is survived by her children: Michael Traubert (Kim) of Tempe, AZ, Patrick Traubert of Plano, TX, Katherine Hudson of McKinney, TX, and Juliana Black (Keith) of Garland, TX; grandchildren: Donald Hudson (Tiffany), Alexander Black, Christopher Black, Heather Black, and Rachel Black; and two great-grandchildren: Micah Grace Hudson and Jona Faith Hudson. The family would like to express its thanks and gratitude to Nyda and Cody Gilbertson of Bozeman for loving and visiting with Virginia in difficult times.

In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to Hospice of Bozeman Health, 3810 Valley Commons Drive, Suite 1, Bozeman, MT 59718 whose compassionate caregivers ensured Virginia’s gentle passing. A memorial mass will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Bozeman, MT on Thursday, September 13th at 10:00 am.
