Obituary for Walter E. Gembrowski Walter E. Gembrowski, of Brighton, formerly of Ann Arbor, Saginaw and Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 13, 2018 with his family at his side. Born March 7, 1921 in Saginaw, he was one of six children born to Stanley and Gertrude (Michalik) Gembarowski. Walter was a 1939 graduate of Saginaw High School.
He served in the CCC in Northern Michigan, managing forestry programs prior to joining the United States Navy in 1942. While in the Navy, Walter served as a radio technician first class, aboard first the USS Barker and later once completed he joined the USS Brown a destroyer. It was during his time on the USS Brown that they rescued a pilot shot down in the Pacific, this pilot was George H.W. Bush.
On September 4, 1948 Walter married the love of his life, Rosemary Novak. After his service, he continued working in the radio and television fields at both television stations and universities. He even operated a radio station out of his home for a time.
Over the years he volunteered his time to many churches in Saginaw doing radio broadcasts of their services. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, vegetable gardening and was an avid euchre player. He enjoyed tinkering with anything electrical and when younger he and his brother built a number of homes in which he did the wiring.
Walter was a member of the VFW William Novak Post in Saginaw. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus throughout his life, in Saginaw, Ann Arbor and Punta Gorda, Florida and he competed in many golf and bowling leagues with the Knights. Walter is survived by his three daughters, Marcia Auger and her husband Bruce of South Bend, IN, Nancy Koch and her husband Robert of Whitmore Lake, and Lisa Himle and her husband Joe of Ann Arbor; six grandchildren, Michelle, Gretchen, Brian, Lauren, Jennifer and Paul; and one great granddaughter Julia; as well as numerous nieces nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rosemary, his son Stephen, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and his parents. In honor of Walter, memorial contributions may be made to Operation Smile or to Arbor Hospice.
