Walter Smith Tweedy, Jr., beloved son, husband and father, 92, of Manassas, VA, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2018. He was a man of character and integrity, devoted to God, country and family, and a well-respected businessman who never knew a stranger. He led by example, and believed in always doing the right thing.

He was born on June 17, 1926 in Lynchburg, VA, son of late Walter Smith Tweedy, Sr and Agnes Witt Tweedy. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, and served as a Petty Officer, 3rd Class, stateside in Great Lakes, IL and Mechanicsburg, PA. He later enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served as a Sergeant through May of 1949.

Walter began his lifelong banking career at Lynchburg Bank and Trust, and served in many roles with First and Merchants Bank in Richmond and Fredericskburg, VA, and ultimately served as President of Augusta Bank and Trust in Fishersville, VA. He spent time later in life as an entrepreneur and small business owner, to include co-ownership in Dairy Queen, Dominion Glass and Po’ Boy’s restaurant, all in Waynesboro, VA. He served as Secretary and Director of Waynesboro East Augusta Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer for the Regional Board of Advisors for Blue Ridge Community College, and Secretary/Treasurer of Waynesboro Bankers Association.

He was a member of B.P.O. Elks Waynesboro. Prior to relocation to Texas in 1993, he was a member of Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church in Staunton, VA, and later became a member of Gracepoint Baptist Church in Coppell, TX. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Randolph Tweedy.

He is survived by: his wife, Deborah Lawrence Tweedy of Manassas, VA; daughters, Linda Rose Tweedy of Waynesboro, VA and Angela Gladwell and son-in-law Jerry Gladwell of Manassas, VA; grandchildren, Alice and Scott Gladwell, and other extended family. The family will receive friends at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Dr. Fishersville, VA, on Sunday, October 21st from 3-5pm, followed by a graveside service Monday at 11am at Springhill Cemetery in Lynchburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, in celebration of Walter’s love of animals, the family would request donations to your local pet shelter or SPCA.
