Obituary for Abel Kirby Abel Roger Kirby, age 78, of Granite Falls, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care of Hudson on June 29, 2018, after a period of declining health. He was born on February 25, 1940 to the late Abel and Callie Hubbard Kirby of Granite Falls. A 1959 graduate of Granite Falls High School, Roger later attended Western Piedmont Community College and then an electronics school.
He was very good with electronic devices and repaired televisions as well as radios. He enjoyed photography and loved to hike wooded areas seeking and taking pictures of wild flowers and carnivorous plants. His other hobby was woodworking and he would build cabinets and carve birds and various animals for family and friends.
Roger was of the Baptist faith. Roger is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Betsy Bryson Kirby of the home. He is also survived by three children; Evelyn Kirby Moore of Hickory, Denise Kirby Camp of Granite Falls, and Michael Avery Kirby and wife Crystal, of Hickory.
He is also survived by five grandchildren: Michelle Moore of Hickory, Alan Moore of Greenville, SC, Bethany Kirby Sawyer of Sawmills, Bryson Kirby of Hickory and Emily Kirby of Hickory. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren: Gabrielle Gibson of Hickory, Brody Noriega of Hickory, Avery Sawyer of Sawmills and Ariel Noriega of Hickory. Among those who also survive him are his sister Grace K. Mitchell and husband Jim of Lenoir and a brother Greg Kirby of Granite Falls as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Roger is predeceased by an older sister Martha, a younger brother Bedford and his grandparents, Avery and Emma Kirby and George and Martha Hubbard. Funeral arrangements include receiving/visitation on Monday, July 2,2018 from 6:00-7:30 PM at Mackie Funeral Home. A graveside service at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 10:00 AM and officiated by Rev.
Wayne White and Rev. Don Ingle. Pallbearers are: Austin Kirby, Bryson Kirby, Alan Moore, Mo Noriega, Justin Sawyer and Kevin Kirby.
