Agnes M. Buchko, 97, of Wellsboro, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at the Carleton Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Wellsboro. She was born on August 15, 1920 in Munson, PA, the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Kolesar) Buchko. Agnes graduated with the Charleston Vocational High School class of 1936 in Wellsboro.
She continued her education at Potts Business College in Williamsport, where she completed a secretarial course. Agnes took great pride in being a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). During that time, she was stationed in Algiers, Africa where she worked in the message center of General Eisenhower’s Headquarters.
She actually had the opportunity to speak with Ike in the hallways there. She also held the position of Assistant Crew Chief of the Message Center, there she supervised the handling of secret and top-secret information from Allied Headquarters. After her honorable discharge from the military, she started a career with the Commonwealth Telephone Company, where she was employed as a supervisor for 40 years.
Due to company restructure, she was relocated a couple of times and lived in Dallas, PA for almost a decade. Agnes was a devout Catholic her entire life, most recently as a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Wellsboro. She would often times tell the story of when she kissed the ring of Pope Pius XII, another rare opportunity presented by her active duty world travels.
Agnes had many other hobbies and interests including, knitting, crocheting, quilting, volunteering with the Mercy Center and travelling the world. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. There is a yearly family reunion held in Agnes’ honor as the Matriarch of her family at 97 years old.
She truly loved attending that event and spending time with her large extended family. Left to cherish her memory are several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and two identical twin great-great nephews. In addition to her parents, Agnes was preceded in death by her siblings, Helen, Catherine, Pauline, Florence, Stephen and Thomas.
