Obituary for Alfred E. Gerdt Dateline: Godfrey Alfred Gerdt, 96, died at 9:39 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at his home in Godfrey. Born June 9, 1921 in Jerseyville, he was the son of Arnold John and Mamie (Schallenberg) Gerdt. He attended Mason School, a 2-room elementary school on Bethany Lane in Godfrey.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 serving four years at bases in the U.S. and in Greenland. On July 18, 1947 he married the former Dorothy M. Lippoldt. Together they resided in the home Gerdt built throughout their 70-year marriage.

Alfred worked for Continental Can Company in St. Louis for 35 years as a set-up man for the presses. Throughout his life he enjoyed farming and gardening and was a member of the VFW Post 1308. Along with his wife Dorothy, he is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Doug) Marschalek of Madison, WI and Janice (Charles) Pautler of Belleville, IL.

Five grandchildren, Jessica and Elizabeth Pautler, Daniel (Heather) and James (Courtney) Marschalek, Nicole (Timothy) Cook and three great grandchildren, Piyamon and Pahkin Marschalek and Molly Cook. One brother, Clarence (Martha) Gerdt of Godfrey, and a sister, Irene (Raymond) Bockstruck of Alton. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Gerdt, a brother, Arnold Gerdt and a sister, Pauline Gerdt.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2018 at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey. Reverend Jerry MeCaskey will officiate. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.
