Obituary for Alice Jean Shartle (Watkins) Alice Jean Watkins Shartle, 91, of Ashland, passed away Friday evening, December 21, 2018 at Lifecare hospice in Wooster, Ohio. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania September 5, 1927 to the late John M. and Alice (Ellstrom) Watkins. She was a graduate of Ashland High School Class of 1945.

On April 9, 1948 she was married to Richard N. Shartle. Richard was a veteran of the United States Air Force and in 1953 Jean left Ashland to be with her husband. For the next 28 years the couple traveled extensively in the United States and Europe, returning to Ashland in between assignments.

When Jean left Ashland in 1953 she became employed by Sperry Rand Corp. and worked in their Kansas City, MO; Los Angeles, CA; Denver, CO, and San Francisco, CA. offices.

Prior to her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, Jean returned to Ashland where she became active in the Ashland County Republican Party holding positions as Secretary of Executive and Central Committee’s. She was employed at the County board of Elections from 1978 to 1984 as Clerk and then Director. She moved to New York in 1984 but maintained a residence in Ashland in which she and her husband returned to in 2009.

Jean was a member of the Ashland Eagles Auxiliary, Ashland Am Vets Auxiliary and attended Trinity Lutheran Church. Jean and Richard were married for 67 years before he preceded her in death on July 6,2015. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Rae Shartle on October 23, 2002 and her sister, Rae V. (Cookie) Benton on October 4, 2003.

She is survived by her special friends, Connie Brown and her children, Alicia, Morgan and Jack of Phoenix, New York; Ken and Karen Killian, John and Charlotte Russo and Raymond Clark all of Ashland. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. January 5, 2019 at the Ashland Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Koch officiating.
