Obituary for Allilee White Davis In 1915, the world was on the brink of a great war, but in the rural area of Mercer County, West Virginia, the most important task at hand was trying to eke a living out of the land on the family farm. On March 17, 1915, Joe and Virgie Mae Ferguson White welcomed another of their, soon to be, nine children into the world as their daughter Allilee was born. One of the nine would die in infancy, but all eight of the others grew to maturity.
As the years went by, Allilee would come to make the acquaintance of a young man named John Davis, who was employed by a company of well drillers based in Virginia. They were married in 1940 and, for a while, would call home, any place that John’s job took him. Virginia Well had an office in Atlanta and John’s family moved to Georgia.
One of the projects of his company was to drill a well for the new country club being built in Newnan. John brought family and trailer to Madras while completing the project, and, in short, found that they loved this area and would decide to make it their home. John had a very full career in the well drilling business, so it was Allilee’s career to manage a home with four very active children.
It was a job she embraced in all its aspects. Outside in the glory of nature was where she found her greatest happiness. She loved gardening and found great pleasure in her flowers and vegetables.
She was famous for her success with tomatoes. As grandchildren were born into the family, Allilee, being a little hard to pronounce, would come to be referred to as “Mama E”. She will forever be known by that moniker.
A busy household, with children and grandchildren underfoot, never seemed to be a problem. She was a welcoming hostess to anyone who came by. She and John would come to find their spiritual base in Jones Chapel Methodist Church in the Madras community; next door to their home.
As long as she was able, she was faithful in her service to that church which had nurtured her family for so many years. She will be placed in the holy ground of that church beside her husband and son. As the psalmist put it so well, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever”.
Mama E believed that with all her heart and that hope carried her over into the loving arms of the Lord she served for 103 years on November 26, 2018. Mrs. Davis is preceded in death by her husband John T. Davis, her son, Charles Davis, a son-in-law Lee Ellis, her daughter-in-law Vickie Davis. She is survived by her daughter Janet Davis Ellis; her sons, John W. Davis, Pat K. Davis and his wife Connie.
There are five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Her surviving sibling is Alma Jean Conner. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan where the family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, November 28th between 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
A service of worship and celebration of her great life will be on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 2:00 PM at her beloved Faith Creek United Methodist Church, to be led by Reverend Dan McFarland and Reverend John Freeland. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who may wish to do so, may honor her life by a memorial contribution to Faith Creek United Methodist Church 2311 North Highway 29 Newnan GA 30265.
