Alma H. Winward November 3, 1937-November 16, 2018 Dr. Alma H. Winward, 81, passed away peacefully at home in North Ogden, Utah, November 16, 2018. He was born November 3, 1937, in Clifton, Idaho, to Bertie William Winward Jr. and Elizabeth (Wuthrich) Winward and was raised on a dairy farm in Clifton, Idaho with his 11 brothers and sisters. He married Bonnie Kaye Pinson February 22, 1955, Preston, Idaho.

Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While raising his first four children, he earned his bachelor’s degree in range science at Utah State University in 1966 and his doctorate in forest science from the University of Idaho in 1970. Upon graduation, he joined the rangeland res faculty at Oregon State University and in 1975 earned the Teacher of the year Award in the School of Agriculture.

In 1980 he accepted an appointment as regional ecologist for the Intermountain Region, USDA Forest Service. During his professional career, he received 17 major awards as a leader in the advancement of rangeland research, teaching and management throughout the Intermountain West. He was highly published and pioneered the development of multiple riparian vegetation monitoring procedures currently used nationally and internationally.

There are even plants bearing his name (Winwardii). The impact of his work resulted in his receiving the W.R. Chapline Research Award 2003, the highest award given by the Society for Range Management. His crowning achievement was being inducted into the University of Idaho Hall of Fame in 2009.

His nominees stated, “No one has had a more positive influence towards improving the riparian areas of the western U.S.” Although he was a renowned ecologist, his personal life was equally accomplished. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He took tremendous pride in the achievements of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

They’ll miss his hilarious, scary and far-fetched bedtime stories. His proud Swiss heritage was evident in his beautiful yard and master gardening skills. He taught courses in the art of fly-tying at OSU and his therapy was fly-casting the lazy bends of Crow Creek at dusk.

We’ll miss his quick wit, his tender heart and his ability to fix anything with duct tape and pink salve (udder balm). As a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings, among them, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader and Bishopric Counselor. From November 2000 to May 2002 he and his wife Bonnie served a mission in the Ogden Central City Mission.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Bonnie; and children: Robert Winward, Gayle (Dave) Mariani, Chad (Heather) Winward, Byron (Ryan) Winward and Nicole (Jim) Burwell; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers and four sisters: Edward (Tara) Winward, Delora (Blair) Henderson, William (Elda) Winward, Brent (Diane) Winward, Linda Winward, Elaine Gailey, and Judy (Kent) Howell.
