Anita “Nina” Garrison March 15, 1943 – March 03, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Anita “Nina” Garrison was a go-getter, who lived life on her terms. She loved to travel and exercise and could always be counted on for thoughtful conversation. Born Arnetha Oliver, Anita, which she later assumed as her legal name, was briefly raised on a tobacco farm, in the Dan River District in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on March 15, 1943.

She attended New York City public schools, graduating from Central Commercial High School and completed her studies at Baruch College, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree. Always on the go, she first met her husband-to-be, Theodore “Ted” Garrison, on the job, while they worked for the City of New York. After Ted left that job and successfully courted Anita, they wed in May of 1973 and had a son in May of 1978.

After retiring as Deputy Director from the New York City Department of Transportation, Anita remained busy—physically and mentally. She traded work wear for workout wear. And, keeping abreast of politics and attending book discussion clubs served as her daily briefings and regular meetings, respectively.

Law & Order (the first 3 franchises), Nancy Wilson, Game of Thrones, Calvin Lockhart, Boardwalk Empire, Pitbull, The Sopranos and Engelbert Humperdinck were some of her more casual enjoyments. She took pride in how she presented herself and always dispensed sound and practical advice to her loved ones. After the death of her parents, she took on the role of family matriarch; she was the glue that held the family together.

Anita is preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Sallie Oliver; her beloved husband, Ted and her beloved sister, Patricia Ann Oliver. Anita leaves, to celebrate her life and cherish her memory: her son, Gregory Theodore Garrison; her three sisters, Gwendolyn Lois, Carolyn Helena and Antoinette Oliver, all from New York City; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends, who will cherish her memory. Anita will be forever loved, missed and remembered by all who knew and loved her.
