Thomas Howard July 11, 1939 – March 03, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Thomas Percy Howard was born in his home at 9am, on July 11, 1939, to the late Maurice Howard, Sr. and Viola Kenny in Henrico County, Richmond, Virginia. Richmond would always have a place in his heart as it’s where he grew up among a tightknit family, where he made countless friends, and gained his preliminary education until 1957 when he graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School. Immediately after high school he entered the US Navy, where he served as a Radiotelegraph Operator from 1957 to 1963.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy as an RM-3 with an E4 rank, “Tony”, as he was most typically known, found his way to the Bronx, New York, which he quickly adopted and called home. Tony truly enjoyed the energy of the city and was well known throughout Harlem where he often delighted in singing Doo Wop songs with other crooner buddies and partying with friends or enjoying refreshing beverages at his home away from home; namely, “Cecil’s” on 149th and Broadway. While in New York, he began a career as a bus driver for Greyhound.

He did this for many years and often reminisced in recounting stories of being on the road and traveling from city to city and state to state. Later in life, however, after seeking better opportunities, Tony began a very fulfilling career as a copier technician for Cannon Business Solutions and would remain there until his retirement in 2002. After retirement, Tony and his wife Cecelia, or “Pee Wee”, as he affectionately called her, settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania where he enjoyed a carefree and leisurely lifestyle a stones throw from his son and two of his grandchildren.

Tony was an avid sports fan and spent much of his free time watching racing; as he was a huge NASCAR fan and often drove as if he were on a circle track somewhere in the south. He also enjoyed watching boxing matches and football games at home or in the company of his newly formed extended family. Tony was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his kind and compassionate spirit, especially when traveling through toll booths where he’d sometimes cause a slight backup of traffic due to exchanging pleasantries and small talk conversations with the toll clerks.

Tony was preceded in death by his devoted wife Cecelia, and brothers, Maurice and Clifford Howard.
