Obituary for Benjamin Macklin Rivers III Benjamin Maclin Rivers, III went to be with his Lord on September 25, 2018 at the age of 86. Ben was born June 5, 1932 in Louisville, Kentucky to Benjamin Maclin Rivers, Jr. and Hortense House Rivers. An alumnus of Louisville Male High School and the University of Louisville, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy for “three years, 11 months, and 24 days” and was a veteran of the Korean War as a Sonar Operator aboard the USS Buck.

He had a successful career in sales for Anaconda Aluminum and Shuert Industries. Known as Benji or Mac to his dear friends, he was deeply involved in his community and friendships. An avid golfer and longtime member of Owl Creek Country Club, where he also served on the Board for several years.

Ben also served as President of Belmont Park’s Neighborhood Association. Perhaps most important to Ben was his involvement at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he was a devoted member of The Brotherhood of St. Andrew. Mr. Rivers was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather (or “Gaggie” as his grandkids call him), and friend.

He loved deeply and was easy to love in return. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, charm, strength of will, hearty laugh, rich baritone, steady faith, heart of service for others, pride for his family, and devotion to his friendships. Ben is reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife of 61 years, Shirley Wilson Rivers, his parents and sisters (Margaret & Pat).

His memory lives on in the hearts of his cherished daughters: Linda Saylor (Russell), Elizabeth Powell (Michael), Nancy Drake (Rogers) and Kristen Woodward; his treasured grandchildren: Lauren (Joe), Rachel (Vince), Connor (Mara), Rebekah, Wilds, Bailey, Jordan, Diedreich, Christian (Judith), Ryan, Myles, and Maclin; and a host of beloved friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Jane Cornett and the very special staff at The Episcopal Church Home for the devoted and loving care demonstrated for him and his family. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1206 Maple Lane, Louisville, KY 40223, with a reception and celebration of Ben’s life immediately following interment.
