Obituary of Bertha Crockett Bertha Graham Crockett of Lynchburg, died on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Joseph McGavock Crockett, Jr She is survived by her nieces, Susan and Bladen Crockett and many treasured cousins.

Bertha was born in Leesburg, Virginia on February 16, 1931, the daughter of the late Joseph McGavock Crockett and Nellie Bladen Crockett. She and her family moved from Maryland to Wytheville, Virginia in 1939 where she lived through her college years, graduating from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She moved to Charleston, South Carolina and worked for a paper company then known as Westvaco Paper Company.

Later she was transferred to their corporate headquarters in New York City. She retired in 1995 and moved to Lynchburg. While in New York, Bertha was a member of and served as a Deacon and an Elder for Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church and worked to improve the lives of the city’s impoverished population.

After relocating to Lynchburg, she transferred her membership to First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg. In her spare time in New York Bertha pursued her interest in painting, studying at the Art Student’s League and chose Lynchburg for retirement partly because of the active art community. She joined the Lynchburg Art Club, taught oil painting classes and served as president of the club.

A Celebration of Bertha’s Life will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Cove Presbyterian Church in Wytheville, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bertha’s name to the Lynchburg Art Club, 1011 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24504 or First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg, 1215 V. E. S.
