Obituary for Bettie Jean Asher Bettie Jean Asher On June 19th, around midday, mom found the peace that had eluded her since Dad’s passing two years ago. She wrote notes during that time expressing the emptiness, the loneliness, the void no one else could fill. The had been the most important part of each other’s lives for seventy-one years.
Bettie was the second child of five born to Forest and Irma Dean Birtcher in Texarkana TX. Born August 23, 1929, she was beautiful from the very beginning. Dynamic and outgoing, as a teen she was a model for Grapette Soda advertising.
Later, as an Army wife living in Taiwan and the Philippines, she would organize women’s groups and shopping trips to Hong Kong. Mom loved to shop. She met her future husband, Forrest Asher, while he was stationed at Red River Ordinance Depot at the start of World War II.
After the war, he would leave his home in New Jersey, come back to Texarkana, and sweep her off her feet. They married in 1947. Dad was in Okinawa on his way to the conflict in Korea when their first son was born.
Their picture was in the Texarkana Gazette the next day…Mothers’ Day, 1950. Mom and dad spent the next twenty-five years in the Army living across the nation and around the world. When he retired from the Army, the family settled in Hooks, TX, and it is home to this day.
Mom leaves behind four sons, Forrest, Jr., his wife Janette and their three daughters; James, his wife Pam and their daughter and son; Kim and his daughter and son; and, Michael, his wife Melinda and their three sons. (One daughter-in-law passed away a number of years ago. ) Mom found such joy in her grandchildren and added joy in her ten great-grandchildren, (and one on the way.
) She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Forrest, (Bully), and Richard Birtcher, and one sister-in-law, Betty Birtcher. She is survived by her two younger sisters and their husbands, Barbara and Jewel Sullivan and Belinda and Ernie Keck, and sister-in-law, Wanda Birtcher. Throughout her life, she was blessed with a wonderful and loving New Jersey family.
They embraced her the first time they met her and never let go. Though many of them have passed on, others have loved and supported her every step of the way. We will miss her…but we know she is in that place where there is no sorrow, there is no suffering, there are no tears.
