Boyd Maxwell Church passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2018, surrounded by his family. Born on May 17, 1960, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Boyd was the son of the late Maxwell and Elanor (Hunter) Church. From an early age, he pursued a career in environmental causes, earning an AA from Garrett County College, a BA in Agriculture and Forestry from West Virginia University (graduating with Honors), and an MS in Environmental Biology from Hood College.

He retired after a long tenure with Montgomery County, Maryland as Chief of Stormwater Management. He later founded and operated Compliance Services, Inc., an environmental consulting firm. Boyd had a large spirit and a booming laugh.

He was a man of multiple passions: for the family he loved, the earth he sought to protect, and the music that gave him joy. He loved dancing, singing, playing the guitar and harmonica, long conversations (especially about politics), fishing, hunting, and spending time with friends and family. Boyd was equally comfortable alone, communing with the natural world.

He liked to hike, camp, and generally spend time outdoors. He built a home with his wife, Carol, at Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County Maryland, his favorite place in all the world. An avid fisherman, he spent more time on than off that body of water, seeing many a sunrise and sunset while ice-fishing on the lake.

Boyd is remembered by his wife, Carol Church; daughter Dr. Sienna Church (a Veterinarian in Leesburg, VA) and her partner Joseph Rufo; daughter Arianna Church (a film editor/producer with McKinsey & Company, currently working in Georgia and Amsterdam); special friend Garrett Hoffman, whom he thought of as a son; brother Alan Church and wife Susan; sister Miriam Rohrbaugh; sister Diane Carr and husband Larry; sister Susanne Church; and brother-in-law Richard Connelly, Jr. and wife Sue.
