Obituary for Carrie E. Hooker Carrie Elizabeth Hooker, 34, of West Hartford, CT was born at sunrise on Friday, July 6, 1984 and passed away peacefully after sunset Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the Hospital of Central CT @ New Britain General. She died after a courageous battle with MBC, but her light was not diminished by the illness, her light was enhanced in ways too numerous to understand. Carrie (affectionately called CareBear) was the beautiful daughter of Gayle Marie Hooker of West Hartford, CT and the late John Virge Davis, Jr
She was the proud mother of Kristina Marie Taylor who remains the Joy and Love of her life. Carrie lived her life so her daughter would know and remember her as a charismatic and strong woman of faith and substance. Carrie attended public schools in Newington and West Hartford and after graduation attended Winston Salem State University, Winston Salem, North Carolina where she earned her bachelor’s degree.
She has earned additional certifications in Counseling and Youth Mentoring, Life Coach, Human Services Development and was working toward her Master’s Degree. Carrie worked for ten years before she was medically unable as a Youth Counselor for the Boys and Girls Clubs, and Hartford Job Corps. She established herself as a Motivational Speaker and Counselor traveling across the country as a much sought-after speaker.
In 2018, Carrier established BROKEN CRAYONS STILL COLOR, LLC. From which her gifts and talents could grow. She was scheduled to speak at a national conference in February 2019.
All of these things were created during the height of her struggle and illness. Carrie took a diagnosis that could disabled her and yet created her legacy. She was the proud recipient of the Women of Color Award in 2018 and many other awards and accommodations for her work.
Carrier leaves to carry her dream and memory forward a loving and devoted daughter, Kristina Marie Taylor of West Hartford, CT her mother, Gayle M. Hooker, West Hartford, CT a sister Monique Cavallo whose devotion and support nourished her and husband Anthony, who gives Kristina a special and safe arms of shelter; a brother Brandon T. Hooker of Sacramento, California, whose faith and love and unbroken prayer chain created power and support anchored and sustained her all of her life especially the four years she was ill. Carrie leaves her six brothers: Colby Davis, Corey John Dupuis, Bryce Davis, Tajuan Davis, Marc Davis and Quinton Davis who loved her through it all. She leaves her loving and devoted Aunts: Sylvia Hooker (Atlanta, Georgia) who enhanced her career and opened doors to speaking engagements and conferences and renewed her spirit with prayer and praise and travel, her Aunt Jacqueline Patton, whose love and support for whatever she needed as an Advocate, Treatment Partner and Second mother serves the finest example of the power of love one can witness, and Rebecca Davis of Bristol, CT, whose cooking and unconditional love is an additional symbol of the gifts God gives you as a member of the Davis family.
Carrie leaves her unforgettable Uncle Craig whose bond to her and Kristina extends beyond either of their limitations, and her Uncle Billy of New York who will also carry her memory forward and her uncles Gregory, Sidney, Melvin, Marvin, Richard and Raymond Davis who loved her dearly. She leaves a host of nieces: Antonia, Alyssa, Chante, Zoey and nephew Lorenzo. Carrie sorrowfully leaves her Twin, Rachael Davis, a cousin and sister who was with her as they grew from toddlers to young women, Rachael’s heart carried the joys and pains of Carrie’s life and she never left her, and never had a day end with a word or contact; she is friend that God sent her who never let go.
She was her Boo, her Joy. She leaves her Cousins, Nikki St Pierre, Heather, Crystal, Charise, Nakiya, Tia, Jada, Phoebe, Tricia, Haylee, Harper, Cyriah, Peyton. She also leaves Rippy, Marcus, DeMel, Mel Adam Jason, Art and Art W whose family gatherings, humor, kindness and thoughtfulness growing up in the Davis family is the envy of all.
Carrie was predeceased by her father John Virge Davis, who deeply loved her and taught her many things, especially how to drive anywhere and anytime and especially how to live with courage and persistence, and as a last gift gave her more years than we can understand; to Carrie he gave her the last four. She was pre-deceased by her loving Aunt Vera (Titi) and Stella, and her maternal and paternal grandparents. Our family is eternally grateful to Dr. Peter Byeff Oncologist and perpetual Advocate, to Jane and Ashley, Anna and the entire team at Hartford Healthcare Infusion Center who treated her with dignity and humor and compassion.
Carrie Elizabeth Hooker, beloved mother and daughter, niece and friend leaves hundreds of women who worked to empower themselves and other through their workshops, community conversations and seminars as a role model. Her gifts and talents and courage were magnified by the opportunity. Homegoing Celebration for Carrie will be held Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 11 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave.
, New Britain, CT with the Rev. Dr. Boise Kimber, Pastor, presiding. Burial will be private.
