OBITUARY Charles B. Shivers Jr. October 22, 1926 – July 23, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family of Charles B. Shivers, Jr. announces his passing after a sudden illness on Monday, July 23, 2018, at his home in Birmingham, Alabama. Charles Shivers, known to many as “Charlie,” was born October 22, 1926, in Birmingham, Alabama to Charles Beck Shivers, Sr. and Atha Nolen Shivers. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and joined the Birmingham Police Department following his military service.

In his early twenties, he also began to develop his lifelong love of aviation. After securing his private pilot license, he went on to receive advanced ratings and eventually became a part-time flight instructor and an FAA examiner. After retiring from the Birmingham Police Department, Charlie served as a pipeline pilot for the Southern Natural Gas Company.

Charlie also built the first Breezy aircraft in the state of Alabama and constructed or assisted in the construction of several additional aircraft in his lifetime. He and his wife Sue traveled to Oshkosh, Wisconsin to attend the Experimental Aircraft Association convention in their Breezy on several occasions and was always willing to offer a ride to other enthusiasts. Up until the week of his passing, Charlie continued to visit a local airfield where he would visit with fellow pilots and lend a helping hand.

Mr. Shivers is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Sue Curry Shivers; daughters, Sharon Shivers and Karen Bell; and brother, Nolen Shivers. Visitation will be at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel on Thursday, July 26, 2018, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm with a service beginning at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
