On July 25, 2018 Charles C. Carpenter, our wonderful dad, brother and grandfather returned to his loving Heavenly Father at the Heritage Senior Living Center in Preston, Idaho. Charles was born on April 19, 1923 to Adam W. (Chip) and Orris C. Carpenter. Life was an adventure in those beautiful Oxford mountains, catching rattle snakes, riding horses and playing with his nine siblings, Keith (deceased), Lucille (deceased), Reid (deceased), Etta Mae Buttars (deceased), Eldon, Howard (Charlene), Boyd, and Mary Nielson (JIm).
He attended school in Clifton and Dayton, learning while causing all kinds of mischief. Charles’s father taught him the value of hard work, which he so valiantly shared the rest of his life. Growing up on a farm there was always work to be done and Charles did more than his share.
As a teenager, the weekends meant going to a dance. All over the valley dances were held, but the one that seemed to be a favorite in the community was the Persiana, where he met and fell in love with the beautiful Bessie Glora Bennett from Mapleton, Idaho. Charles and Bessie were married on November 26,1943 and later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple.
Shortly after they were married, Charles was drafted to serve in the Army in WWII. He served in the Philippines and Japan. Upon his return, Charles and Bessie bought a farm in Whitney, Idaho where they stayed for many years loving their neighbors, friends, and where eight of their ten children were born.
While still farming, Charles started working for Franklin County Sugar Company, which later became Amalgamated Sugar Company or White Satin. In 1961, Charles moved his family to a large brick home in Preston where two more children were born. Charles continued his career with the sugar company and was transferred to American Falls in 1979.
This move proved to be a blessing in their lives. Many wonderful memories of American Falls have been shared through the years and the family is ever so grateful. Upon his retirement in 1989, Charles and Bessie again moved to Preston to be closer to family.
He grew the biggest and best garden in every home they lived in, while mom preserved and shared the harvest. He is survived by his eight daughters and two sons. Peggy Phillips of Preston, Linda of Logan, Brent of Logan, Carol (Uri) of Carefree, Arizona, Jana Lang of Chubbuck, Idaho, JoAnn Barthlome (Randy) of Preston, Laura Jeanne Smith (Hal) of Franklin, Tamra Wilson of Herriman, Utah, Tracy (Diana) of Cub River, Idaho, and LeeAnn Mellinger (Brian) of West Haven, Utah.
Also adding to his posterity are 28 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, and 13 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Joyce and Lois, a brother and sister-in-law Eldon and Ina Bennett. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Bessie, his parents, his father and mother-in-law Henry and Esther Bennett, a son-in-law Ellis Lang, a granddaughter Trena Rawlings, a great granddaughter Graycee Smith, and his brother-in-law Odell Ransom and Val Buttars.
The family is so grateful for the many wonderful hands who cared for him in his final days. Access Home Health Care, especially Thelma and Carl, and the Heritage Senior Living Center staff. Funeral services will be held on Wed, Aug.
1, 2018 at Noon in the Preston Third Ward Chapel, 155 N. 2nd W., Preston, Idaho with Bishop Ron Smellie conducting. Friends may call Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 S. 800 E., Preston, Idaho and Wednesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the church. Military rites and interment will be in the Franklin, Idaho Cemetery.
