OBITUARY Charles Dean Maitland Sr. October 13, 1955 – October 12, 2018 Charles Dean Maitland, Sr. passed away peacefully on the morning of October 12, 2018, one day before his 63rd birthday. He was born in Humboldt, TN to John D. Maitland and Dorothy Mae Crum Maitland, both of whom preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was his youngest brother, Mark Anthony Maitland.

Dean is survived by his loving wife, Carla Love Maitland of Memphis; his son, Charles Dean Maitland, Jr. (Gail) of Syracuse, NY; his step-sons, William Kent Fortson, Jr. (Shelley) of Memphis and Russell Louis Fortson (Jenny) of Colorado Springs, CO; 3 step-grandchildren and 2 step-great grandchildren. Dean also leaves behind his sister, Gail Maitland Bernard (David) of Gulf Shores, AL and his brothers, Randall Lee Maitland, Sr. (Chris) of Dale, IN and John Allan Maitland of Knoxville, TN, along with numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Dean joined the Air Force during the Vietnam War and served at the USAF Base in Ramstein, Germany.

He was an outstanding musician, playing guitar professionally for a number of years. As a guitar teacher, he shared his love of music with others. He worked as Education and Training Coordinator at Memphis Area Legal Services and later ran his family’s antiques and collectibles business, AnythingGoes.

He was a long-time member of the American Legion, Post No. 1 and also of the Clan Maitland Society of North America. Dean struggled for a number of years with a rare neurodegenerative disease and more recently with cancer.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society, or any charity of choice. There will be no funeral service, as Dean donated his body to Genesis for scientific research to help others. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN.

Visitation and a reception with the family will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
