Charlie J. Harkey, 89, of Concord, passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Morningside of Concord. Charlie was born June 18, 1929 in Stanly County to the late William and Lectie Harwood Harkey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ola Mae Furr Harkey; brothers, Carl, Dave, Clete, Lee Jay, and Bill; and sister, Elsie Smith.

He loved his country and proudly served in the Army. He retired from Blythe Brothers and Baucom’s Nursery. Charlie enjoyed gardening, tractors and blue-grass music.

He enjoyed meeting and sharing conversations with anyone and never met a stranger. He attended Back Creek ARP Church. His faith and love of the Lord set the example for his family.

Survivors include his son, Don Harkey (Lynn); daughter, Gail Vermillion (David); grandchildren, Emily Mauldin, Daniel Harkey, Lara Little, Adam Vermillion, and Philip Vermillion; great-grandchildren, Claire Mauldin, Natalie Mauldin, Emma Little, Banks Vermillion, and Edi Vermillion; brothers, Wick and Bobby, and sister, Margie Furr. The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm – 3:45 pm, Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Back Creek ARP Church, 1821 Back Creek Church Rd, Charlotte. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 pm, officiated by Rev.

Matt Carr. Charlie will be laid to rest in the Back Creek Cemetery next to his beloved wife of 61 years. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County or Back Creek ARP Church.
