Holly, New Jersey on November 15, 1948 to Francis and Mary Hartmann and spent her childhood near Medford, New Jersey. She graduated from Lenape Regional High School in 1967 and from Southern Illinois University in 1971 with a Baccalaureate in Zoology. Clara returned to New Jersey and met her future husband Bill when he was stationed at Ft.

Dix, New Jersey. Clara and Bill were married in Medford on May 6, 1972 after Bill was discharged from the army. Their first home was in St. Paul, Minnesota where she worked in a department store while Bill was in school.

After a brief time in St. Joseph, Missouri, they settled in Las Cruces in January, 1978. Clara was a devoted mother to Kate and Carl and ran the family home. Between children and husband rearing, Clara’s favorite pastime was anything having to do with cloth, thread, yarn, and crafts.

She made her own wedding dress, a suit and shirts for Bill, some of the clothes for Carl and Kate, and numerous dolls and doll clothes. Her needle work included knitting, crocheting, and needle point. Her cloth and needle work were distributed to relatives, friends, and the prayer shawl group at church.

She loved bowling with the Naggy Aggies and bird watching on her walks and in her back yard. For years she was very active as an officer in the New Mexico State University (NMSU) Faculty Women and particularly the crafts and antique groups. Her devotion to children was evident as she was a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years at the University United Methodist Church.

Her greatest recent pleasure was her grandchildren and making them Christmas stockings, quilts, and other homemade treasures. Clara is survived by her husband Bill, her daughter Kate Lewis and son-in-law Jeremy Lewis of El Paso, Texas, grandchildren Aurora and Clayton Lewis, siblings Shirley, Mary, John and Charles all of New Jersey. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a great, great nephew.
