Obituary for David Brownson Martin Sr. David Brownson Martin, Sr., 90, left this earth on June 26, 2018. He is with his Father now, where he longed to be. David began his life in San Diego, CA on August 7, 1927.

Born into the Navy, he was the only child of Elizabeth Brownson Martin and Admiral Harold Montgomery (Beauty) Martin, both of whom preceded him in death. David leaves his beloved wife of 66 years, Bonnylin Woods Martin, two sons, David (Maureen) and Montgomery (Laura), much loved grandchildren, Lauren Martin, Neile Tubergen (Aaron), Bonny Watts (Nathan), Kathryn, Emma and four great-grandchildren. Family, construction and aviation were his life-focus.

He was a member of the greatest generation and his entire life he enjoyed recounting the military stories of both war and peace that had informed his disciplined life of quiet leadership. That characteristic carried on in the following generations with first son and granddaughter both choosing paths of naval aviation. Known for his kindness, humility, and intelligence David was loved and respected by many.

Due to his extraordinary gift of problem-solving any construction detail, he was held in the highest esteem as a teacher and mentor. He epitomized the work of a “master-builder” in his 60-year design and construction career. His building projects are too many to name and helped shape Memphis.

David and Bonny always enjoyed a varied and full life of traveling and friends. One of his favorite places to revisit was always Hawaii where he, at the age of 14, had lived through the devastating attacks on Pearl Harbor and the war in the Pacific that would shape the man who he was to become. His many stories of those moments captured the attention of people his whole life through.

On Monday, July 2, the family will gather at Elmwood Cemetery for a private service. At 10:30-12:00 friends may gather for a time of remembrance at Independent Presbyterian Church with a 12:00 noon Worship Service to follow.
