Daysen J Luck, 13, returned to his loving Heavenly Father on March 23rd, 2019. He passed peacefully with a smile on his face while sleeping next to his dad. Daysen was born June 6th, 2005 in Sandy, Utah.
Daysen was born to Bryan and Laurel Luck. He has five siblings, Cabe, Kinon, Hayley, Grayson, and Zeek. He is survived by his mom and dad, siblings, Grandma Nyla and Grandpa Garold Luck, Grandma Peggy Napoli and Grandpa Greg Pittman, and multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Daysen had a mind of his own and always did things on his time and in his way. He was born with a congenital heart defect and Down syndrome. Instead of waiting for his first heart surgery to be at 9 months, he decided he needed it at 3 months old.
Instead of walking at 2 (as his family would see him do when sneaking around the house when he thought they weren’t looking) he started walking at 3 ½. And in true Daysen fashion, he continued to teethe at 5 years old and refused to lose teeth on his own. All of these things were a product of Daysen having Down syndrome.
Down syndrome is also known as trisomy 21. It is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. It is called Down syndrome after Doctor John Langdon Down, not because individuals with Down syndrome are “down”.
Daysen’s family has felt very blessed having Daysen because they were able to gain many more family members in the Down syndrome community. While his health conditions may have held him back, his personality was larger than life. Daysen enjoyed all the finest things in life.
He was particularly fond of Yummy brand Dino Chicken Nuggets. This was his “go to” meal at breakfast, lunch, and dinner for several years. He went through about six boxes of nuggets a month.
That’s approximately 360 pounds of chicken nuggets a year. He also enjoyed Nutella sandwiches; especially in the middle of the night. He would bring a plate, loaf of bread, knife, and jar of Nutella into his mom’s room between 2 AM and 3 AM and plop it all on her head with a big smile on his face.
He ate 2 jars of Nutella a month. He also loved his Mac and Cheese (only Kraft brand) and would eat a full box by himself. His parents would have to instruct all babysitters to stop him at one box.
This started after he ate three boxed in one sitting. He went through 18 boxes of Mac and Cheese a month. Less frequently he would have a Cheeseburger but only from McDonald’s.
And, we’ll never forget the time he tried to burn the house down because he wanted a plate of French Toastix and thought he would make them himself. Along with his specific taste buds, only certain people were allowed to make certain foods. Dad was in charge of Mac and Cheese and Mom was in charge of Nuggets and Nutella Sandwiches.
Daysen always enjoyed a good laugh. Recently, he thought “playing dead” was quite the game. Of course it would give his parents heart attacks.
It wasn’t uncommon to find him at the bottom of the stairs not moving and then when his family would ask if he was OK he would jump up laughing. He would scare his mom by putting his 3ft tall Kylo Ren in front of the bedroom door in the middle of the night. He would often turn off the lights while everyone sat at the kitchen table and then growl while the family would ask, “What happened to the lights” and “What was that noise?
” He would laugh and laugh as this would transpire. His favorite place to go was the library. He would take at least an hour to decide on one movie and thought it was funny when his parents were ready to go.
His favorite thing to say is “You’re crazy” which the family would then repeat back to him and he’d start laughing. TV Shows were usually watched in French and Spanish and he always laughed in all the right places. He also loved a good “laugh a thon” while on car rides.
Just like most 13 year old boys, Daysen was a huge fan of Star Wars and anything Marvel. His favorite characters are Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Bat Man, Spider Man, The Hulk, and Iron Man. The saying around the house was often that if Star Wars was real he would have been a sith lord….
Darth Daysen. He would use the force to “choke” his dad quite often. Of course it was never to the point of death.
He always released the force grip before Dad would pass out. He enjoyed dressing up as his favorite Super Hero’s and saving the house from the bad guys. Daysen had every toy figure from Marvel to Star Wars but Star Wars was always his go to.
Daysen had several light sabers to choose from and masks of all his favorite characters. He also loved playing the Play Station with his siblings. His favorite games were anything Lego but he did enjoy playing Minecraft Hide and Seek.
The family would like to give a public thank you to all of his respite workers, Linda Wood, Kayla Keate, and Cristine Earl as they have become family. We would not have made it through this time without them. Thank you to all of the doctors and nurses that have watched over him throughout the years.
We are especially thankful for Dr. Valentine and Dr. Day who have cared for Daysen since birth and Dr. Moore and Nurse Natalie for the care given over the last several months. Also, thank you to all our family, friends, and neighbors, both new and old. We couldn’t make it through this time without each and every one of you.
