Denise Marie Whattam, 76, of Haines City, FL, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center. She was born on September 29, 1942 in Watertown, NY to Charles and Viola (Duell) Forbes. The wife of a career AF veteran, she resided at 8 AF Bases before settling in Crete, IL where two sisters lived nearby.

Denise was a seamstress and a supervisor at Haggar Slacks Company in Oklahoma City. She later became an owner- partner of the Olde Village Shoppe in Crete, selling crafts and gifts for 10 years, before she eventually retired. In the winter, she loved spending time in her vacation home in Haines City, FL.

Denise was a very kind and generous person who loved to go to garage sales every Saturday, both in Florida & at home in IL. She looked for things to buy for her family and friends, and she would even tell them how good of bargain it was. She also was a former President of the Crete AMVETS Auxiliary.

Her family & friends fondly remember her for baking the best cookies and pies for their birthdays and Christmas. She baked over 600 pies for both for the fish fries at the Crete AMVETS Auxiliary and pumpkin pies for the St Laborious Community Outreach Thanksgiving dinner in Steger, IL. Denise loved to play Bingo & Bunco, was an avid reader and did thousands of crossword puzzles.

She will be truly missed by all who loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents and 12 siblings. Denise is survived by her husband, of 57 years, J. Addison Whattam; two sons, John Charles Whattam and wife, Patricia of Highlands Ranch, CO and James Kevin Whattam and wife, Melissa of Aurora, IL; daughter, Kelley Anne Barbaro and husband, James of Orland Hills, IL; brother, Guy Forbes and wife, Harriet of Watertown, NY; sisters, Jacqueline Griffin and husband, Richard of Crete, IL and Carol Ambrose of Black River, NY; grandchildren, Jake, Mandy, Drew, Ceci, Anthony and Nick; great grandchildren, Easton and Camden.

Donations may be made in her name to the Steger St Liborius Community Outreach. A local memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Central Park I Rec. Hall in Haines City, FL.
