Derek Hughes, March 05, 1989 — May 20, 2019

Derek Hughes, age 30, passed away suddenly on May 20, 2019, surrounded by his close family and loving friends. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on March 5, 1989, Derek lived in the nearby surrounding areas until 2003 when he moved to Clare, Michigan. Here, he attended Clare High School where he enjoyed being a part of the football team and formed many long lasting friendships that are still prevalent to this day.

He graduated in 2007 and after a short move back to Ann Arbor he decided that Mount Pleasant was the place for him. He attended courses at Mid Michigan Community College while working at Target where he quickly moved up to Senior Team Leader. This path led him to become an Assistant Manager at Walmart in Grand Ledge, Michigan.

Most recently, he was excited in starting his new career with Schwan’s. These opportunities created many other important friendships along the way. Throughout his life, Derek was an avid video game player who also had a love for movies, music, and having a good time with his family and friends.

He will always be our sunshine who had an infectious personality, a heart of gold, and a hilarious sense of humor. Despite his short time here, he impacted so many and has the ability to light up any room. Derek is survived by his loving mom, Dianne; two sisters, Becky and Jennifer and her husband Barry; and his niece, Hannah, all of Dexter.

He is also survived by with his dad, Frank Hughes, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and many loving friends. Derek was able to achieve one of his lifelong dreams in 2017, a road trip to California with two of his best friends by his side. In January 2019, Derek took a trip to Sanibel Island with his mom, sisters, and niece.

This vacation meant a lot to him and his family is grateful for those memories. A memorial gathering will be held at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd. , Ann Arbor, on Saturday, May 25, 2019 from 1 PM until 4 PM.
