Dexter Gerard Lee February 15, 1956 – March 08, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Dexter Gerard Lee, 63, passed away on Friday, March 6 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born on February 15, 1956 at Fort Dix in Trenton, New Jersey to William Scott Lee, Sr and Inez (Wood) Lee. Dexter grew up in Lynchburg.

He was a member of St. James C.M.E. Church. He attended Bocock Elementary School and in the 3th grade transferred to Mountain View Elementary School where he, his siblings and 2 other students helped integrate the Campbell County school system in 1965. He graduated from Brookville High School in 1974.

While in high school he ran track for the Brookville Bees. Dexter loved to cook and spent most of his work life cooking at establishments such The Stoney Badger Tavern, Bulls Restaurant, The 601 Main Street Restaurant in the Holiday Inn, and Charley’s. Dexter was preceded in death by his father, William Scott Lee, Sr and his brother and best friend William Scott Lee, Jr

He is survived by Betty Shavers, his life partner of 41 years, his mother Inez Wood Lee of Lynchburg, VA, Kimberly R. Smith, Eugenia M. Brown, Ja’Miracle L. Carter, whom he reared as his daughters; his grandchildren Marrco M. Smith Sr., Rachel M. Smith and Amanda M. Smith and his great grandchildren Marrco Smith Jr., Tahj Steeples, Kali M. Steeples and Kizi Steeples. He will be deeply missed by his siblings, Ramonia Lee Shopshire (James) of Suitland, MD, Monica Mobley and Garnell Thompson of Lynchburg, VA, and DeShea Moody (Dennis) of Bedford, VA. His presence will also be missed by his aunts, Nancy Wood, Geraldine Wood and Mildred G. Wood, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Dexter has left an imprint of love upon our lives. His legacy will live on, because all that he did was rooted and grounded in love. He loved his family first, last and always.

He loved his friends. He loved life and because he was an organ donor, Dexter will live on in those who were recipients of his lungs, liver and kidneys. Dexter has gone toward the greater light on a distance shore.

We can have peace in our hearts for what remains of him and for what has gone ahead. We are grateful for his earthly journey with us and we release him back into the welcoming arms of God, our Creator. And most importantly, we give thanks to God for his love that has genuinely touched our lives and we rejoice that we are all better and happier because we knew and were loved by Dexter Gerard Lee.

The family is receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday March 15, 2019 at Community Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday March 16, 2019 at St. James CME. Family and friends will assemble at the church.
