Donald Caddens Bird January 22, 1935 – January 03, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Donald Caddens Bird Donald Caddens Bird passed away, Thursday evening, January 03, 2019 at his home with his family. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia on January 22, 1935 to the late Ernest David Nelson Bird and Minnie Francis Cobley Smith. He moved extensively as the stepson of a Navy man, Harold V. Smith, eventually settling in Alameda, California after stops in Seattle, Dallas, Alameda (twice), Memphis, San Diego, and Pearl Harbor, Honolulu.

He graduated from Alameda High School in 1953, became a U.S. Citizen in 1955, graduated from City College San Francisco in 1956, attended University of California Berkley in 1956 and 1957 and graduated San Francisco State College in 1959. He was an intelligent, brave and thoughtful man, having survived open heart surgery at age 26, a successful career in personnel management, exercising regularly, eating well and enjoying his many friendships and extensive family. He married Barbara Ann Bruce in March 1962 in California, had three children together, lived in various cities within California, Connecticut, Virginia and divorced in 1983.

After moving back to California, he met and married Christine Mary Thompson in September 1989 in Livermore and lived a happy and wonderful life for many years together. All of his life he loved his family, enjoyed swimming, yoga, pilates, tai chi, cooking, watching and following sports, and being outdoors. He became the children’s supervisor for bible study fellowship and an active member of Cedar Grove Community Church in Livermore.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Christine, his sons, Brian Donald Bird and wife Virginia of Centreville, VA; Bruce Caddens Bird and wife Kristine of Berthoud, CO and his daughter, Rebecca Ann Tarantino of Pleasanton, CA; his twin-brother, David Bird of Sacramento; his grandchildren, Nicolas Davis, Nathan Davis, Natalie Tarantino, and Rachel Bird; his step-children Kate Komatz and husband David, Samantha Beasley and husband Tom, and his many step-grandchildren Sam, Rex, Elizabeth, Paul, Luke, Derek, Nathan, Nicole, Justin and Megan. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Cedar Grove Community Church in Livermore with Pastor Keith Cromie officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service, in the church’s lobby.
