Donald Eugene Carl, 92, of Ashland passed away on October 11, 2018 at Brethren Care Nursing Center. He was born In Mansfield, Ohio on July 2, 1926, to Harland Smith and Chloe Ruth (Eagle) Carl. Don graduated from Jeromesville High School, class of 1944, where he was the president of his high school class for four years.

After graduation from high school, Don enlisted in the US Army, serving in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Austria. He was a corporal in the 3rd Chemical Mortar Battalion, company B, 84th division. He was squad leader of a S4.

2 inch mortar crew. He was responsible for the control and tactical employment of the squad. For his patriotic service Don received the EAME Theater Ribbon, 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and WWII Distinguished Unit Badge.

After discharge from the army Don worked in his father’s plumbing and heating business. In 1951 he joined Gorman-Rupp Company, working there for 40 1/2 years, retiring as plant engineer. On August 22, 1948 Don married Marjorie Lucille Crumlick who survives.

Their union produced three children: Barbara Jean (Roger) McBride of Powell, OH, Debra Jane (Dr. Patrick) Shanahan of Glenview, KY, and Kenneth Eugene (Carol) Carl of Cincinnati, OH. Also surviving are grandchildren: Katherine (Justin) Glass, Zachary (Abi) McBride, David (Dr. Katherine) Shanahan, Dr. Peter (Elizabeth) Shanahan, Emily (Dr. Seth) Hamman, Megan Carl, and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister June McFarlin and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, brother George Carl, sister-in-law Flora Carl, and brother-in-law Stanley McFarlin. Don was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeromesville, a life member of the American Legion Jerome Post 749, and Gorman- Rupp 25 Year Club. He enjoyed working in his garden and took great pride in his yard.

He also enjoyed traveling and playing cards. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 13th at 12 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeromesville with Pastor Jerry Rhea officiating. Friends may visit with the family at the church prior to the service from 10:30 AM-12.

Burial will follow the funeral at the Jeromesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jeromesville Trinity Lutheran Church. The family wishes to give special thanks to the caregivers of the Brethren Care during his final years.
