Doris’ Obituary Doris M. Covert passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at her Show Low home. The youngest of 4 siblings, she was born in Florence, NE on May 10, 1923.

Her family moved to a small homestead in Dowagiac, MI when she was a toddler. After completing high school, she went on to Western Michigan University but her education was interrupted when she left college to contribute to the war effort by becoming a riveter on ships and submarines. She returned to college after the war to receive her bachelor’s degree in elementary and physical education and later went on to receive her master’s degree.

After teaching in Kalamazoo schools for several years, she relocated to Arizona where she completed her teaching career. Doris was always patient and encouraging with children and positively influenced many lives. Always a lover of the outdoors, Doris passed on her wilderness survival knowledge to her nephews and nieces.

She was an avid camper and had a wonderful sense of adventure having once hitchhiked across country with one of her college friends. She also hiked down into the Grand Canyon and swam at Havasu Falls barely escaping from a whirlpool. (true story).

Doris loved sports, books, classic movies, animals and the White Mountains of Arizona. Without asking for compensation, she would dog, cat, turtle, or pig sit for traveling friends. An avid reader, especially of biographies, she acquired library cards in several different cities and states.

If Doris had kept track of all the postcards she ever sent, she probably would have broken a world record. She was great at keeping in touch with friends and family. Doris was optimistic, friendly and everyone that met her instantly liked her.

She was fiercely independent and felt she was “queen of the road” as she was still driving at age 95. Although she lived a full life on her own terms, Doris will be missed by her family and friends who loved her. I’ll say.
