Doris Reed Nichols July 21, 1924 – January 06, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Doris Eloise Reed Nichols, age 94, passed from this life Sunday, January 6, 2019, at her residence in Shelbyville after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. A native of Bedford County, She was raised in the Singleton Community. She was a graduate of Morgan Prep School in Petersburg.
Doris, wife of the late Lonnie W. Nichols, was born on July 21, 1924 in Singleton, TN to the late Harvey Reed and Aubrey Kate Reed. During Lonnie’s career in the Air Force the couple traveled the world over. Doris devoted her life to her family and was a wonderful wife, mother and aunt.
For many years she was the pianist at the First Baptist Church in Petersburg. After returning to Bedford County in 1986 she was an active member at First Baptist Church in Shelbyville. She was very active and a devoted volunteer with the senior citizens in both Petersburg and Shelbyville for many years.
She visited nursing homes and carried ceramics for residents to paint. Her volunteer involvement included helping prepare sack lunches for emergency and holidays under the Meals on Wheels program. Doris organized the decorations at the senior citizens for the birthday parties and special programs.
She also entertained with her skills at the piano. She organized the quilters for the handmade quilt giveaway as the prize during the annual country ham breakfast fundraiser. She helped with the newsletters for mailing.
Doris was described by center director, Geneva Smith as an invaluable, true, devoted volunteer who never thinks about time when it is helping someone else. She was a member of various civic and auxiliary organizations. Doris is survived by: her son, Larry W. (Margaret) Nichols of Murfreesboro; sisters, Lila Cartwright and Bobbie Jo Stubblefield of Shelbyville; three step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019, in the chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Rasnick officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Orchard Cemetery in Petersburg. Family members: Jason Neel, Zach Ledford, Nathan Ledford, Jamie Petty, Jonathan Smotherman and Jared Smotherman will be serving as pallbearers.
The family wants to thank Willow Brook Hospice for the care given to Mrs. Nichols. A special thanks goes to her faithful and tireless caregivers, Ruby Jett and Bell Trivitt. Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church @ 304 Depot St. Shelbyville, TN 37160.
