Obituary for Dorothy J. Bungert Dorothy J. Bungert of Fairhaven, MA died Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at St. Luke’s Hospital, in New Bedford, MA, after suffering a stroke. Born in Rome, New York, on July 9, 1936, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Ruth (Wittmann) Bungert. The family moved to Fairhaven in 1936 and Dot attended the Rogers School and graduated from Fairhaven High School, Class of 1953.
Further education included the Kinyon Business School, in New Bedford. Employment included the Rating Association, Revere Copper and Brass Inc. of New Bedford and the Accounts Receivable Department at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Dorothy involved herself in many creative activities such as playing bridge, scrimshaw, bird carving, baking, bowling, quilting and yoga at the Fairhaven COA.
In addition, Dot and her longtime companion, the late Robert A. Doucette, of Fairhaven, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, while at home they spent many hours sailing the coast of New England on their 28foot sailboat named The Last One. Dorothy was a member of the First Congregational Church, in Fairhaven, for a total of 80 years. During this period Dot volunteered in the Church’s thrift shop and concession booth at the annual Homecoming Fair.
Survivors include a brother, James A. Bungert and his wife Roxanne of Mattapoisett; a sister, Carol J. Backus and her companion Robert B. Jones of Marion; six nieces and nephews, Daniel J. Bungert and his wife Jennifer, Lori B. Bardwell, Sean B. Backus and his companion Valerie Almon, Jason A. Bungert and his wife Tanya, Kathleen A. McGarry and her husband David and Ethan D. Bungert and his wife Hannah; six great nieces and nephews, Emily and Benjamin Bungert, Joshua Bardwell, Tyler and Elizabeth Bungert and Owen McGarry; two cousins, Eleanor Mann and Marjorie Phillips. Our family would like to thank caregivers, Jessica Paiva and Albertina Goncalves for their care, love and affection given to Dot, which enabled her to live her life with dignity. Also, our thanks to the SICU staff of St Luke’s Hospital for their professional care and understanding during Dot’s hospitalization.
Calling hours are Tuesday, from 4-7pm, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven. Her Funeral service will be Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 10:00am, at the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven. Interment will take place in Rome, NY.
