Dorothy was born at home east of Abernathy, TX on June 2, 1923, to the late Mr. Ernest Jones and Mrs. Edna Myers Jones. Dorothy graduated from New Deal High School and attended West Texas State Teachers College where she studied Home Economics until the war. She returned to West Texas State College and graduated in 1961.

On December 22, 1941, Dorothy married Joe W. Gill in Abernathy, TX. In 1945, after the war, Dorothy and Joe moved to the Gill family farm in Deaf Smith County. In 1958, the Gills made their final move to Canyon, TX.

She spent the early years as a homemaker and mother. After she raised her family, she worked for Yingling Oil Company for 16 years. After retiring, she began taking creative writing classes, where she found her new-found joy.

In 1985 she wrote Memories of World War II, the story of she and her husband’s lives during the war and the many Texas 36th Division heroes. She later compiled another work entitled Texas 36th Division Heroes. She also wrote stories from her childhood memories and shared them with family members, who will enjoy her writings for generations to come.

Dorothy was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon where she taught youth through adults for many years. She especially felt a sense of accomplishment when she worked with the Historical Committee and sifted through boxes of church treasures. She helped display many hidden artifacts in the new church entrance.

She said Jesus walked with her through each day of her long life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joe Gill on December 12, 2008, after 66 years of marriage; her daughter Marita Prichard and husband George; a sister, Arlene Kerr, a brother Lloyd Jones; and son-in-law, Eddie Meadows.
